Oil Pump Mechanics

Hello again. Just a simple question for you.

We installed the oil pump today and all was good. However, we have a question regarding the physics/mechanics of the engine. From what we can see there is nothing to bind the crankshaft and the Oil Pump Sleeve. When the sleeve's teeth are locked inside the pump, the crank turns inside it rather smoothly. How does the pump actually work? There is no key, or notch; nothing that would indicate some sort of locking mechanism between the crankshaft and the oil pump.
