That is a channel for oil flow - not for an o-ring.

See Figure 3-22 for a fully dressed case.

See text on Page 128 - lube the crankshaft nose, or inside of the number eight bearing prior to assembly.

Don't forget to lube the intermediate shaft bearings either...
