2099 of them, actually. And that is the total that was ever made by the factory.

The good news is that a number have been made since then. There are a number of ways you can do it. Google on "Porsche 912 Gumby VW Type IV" and you should be able to find one converter's website. He started with an earlier car but I don't think that's an impediment.

I believe Bus engine tin will work with some mods. Kennedy makes an adaptor setup for Type IV to 915 gearbox mounting. Bus exhaust can be used. There are, in short, ways to get around the problems.

But it isn't that cheap, and it takes work. It's not the kind of thing you to just because you can't afford to properly repair and maintain the car, IMHO. You'll probably wind up with more money in it than if you find yourself a used running 911 motor and swap that in. And you'll have less power, and you'll lack that glorious 911 sound.
