Good idea to remove the distributor and inspect it. It's probably dry from lack of lube and the weights may be hung up at midpoint. On early points-based distributors, you can easily remove the contact point mounting plate and inspect the centrifugal weight mechanism. Do this on the bench or send it to Steve. His distributor machine allows convenient verification of the advance curve; he can even modify it if you'd like, but you can also check its basic operation with your timing light and tach.
