I like the WRX wagon, and Volvo wagon suggestions. For me, I picked up an 04 Toyota Matrix XRS (180hp) new for under 18K and it's fun, roomy and gets good MPG if you stay out of the high RPMs.
For BMW's, I think there are great deals on the E36 cars, I still love the E36 M3. It would leave you some $$ for upgrades to the 911.
