Black Beauty II



Black Beauty II is a 1972 Porsche 911 modified to resemble one of the race-purpose 2.8-liter 911 RSR's that Porsche made in 1973. As the Roman numerals indicate, it is the second incarnation of a previous 911 I owned, which was a 1973 911 built into a 1973 Carrera RS clone.

I crashed Black Beauty I at Laguna Seca on November 10, 2002. In the weeks that followed, it was determined that the tub of the 1973 was not worth saving, and that a wider, more-capable 911 could be build around the same drivetrain (then a 1993 964 engine and a 1977 915 transaxle). In order to get it completed in time for the upcoming Open Track Challenge, it had to be conceived, constructed and finished in only 12 weeks.

Without the ideas and encouragement of members of the Pelican Parts Technical BBS, and the dedication and sacrifice of several key shops (and vendors like Pelican Parts), it wouldn't have been possible to get this car built in this timeframe.

The Details

1972 911T Non-Sunroof Coupe (VIN 9112100777)



All the mechanical work was done by TRE Motorsports with technician Tyson Schmidt and shop owner Dave Bouzaglou each coming up with a lot of new ideas for how to make an old 911 faster.

Suspension and Brake mods
- 9.5x11x17 2-piece Lindsey Racing Fuchs-centered wheels with painted insets and polished spokes
- 930 Brakes from a 1986 donor
- Lowered to slightly below Euro height
- Front JRZ single-adjustable struts, with 300# coil springs. The struts were modified by ERP and Tyson Schmidt, including raised and re-cambered spindles and extended control arms (by TRE Motorsports, Tyson and also FABCAR of Indiana)
- Front upper strut mounts modified for additional caster by TRE Motorsports
- Elephant Racing front Monoballs
- Turbo Tie Rods with drop links to correct bump steer
- Elephant Racing triangulated strut brace
- Aluminum front crossmember
- Smart Racing 22mm front antiswaybar
- Aluminum rear trailing arms with Smart Racing Camber Boxes and monoballs
- Smart Racing 23mm rear antisway bar
- ERP 935-style spring plates
- Rear adjustable Öhlins shocks valved by Wevo with 550# coil-over springs



Engine, Driveline and Oil Cooling mods
- 3.6 liter engine from a 1995 993
- Instant-G Engine Swap Kit, including 911 Chips/Steve Wong performance programming
- Close-ratio 8:31 transaxle with external cooler and internal spray bar, 135 mph max gearing
- Wevo replacement shifter, shift coupler and internal gateshift
- Guard Transmission clutch-type limited slip, set at 80%
- Engine moved forward ~1.3 inches for improved weight distribution
- 993 headers mated to a Magnaflow muffler
- Expanded-capacity 1972 oil tank ahead of rear axle
- Dual front fender oil coolers



Body mods
- All the bodywork and paint work was done by Kevin Mentzer of Automotive Innovations and Restoration (818-786-2181).
- Fiberglass RSR front fenders, bumpers, rear quarters, by Rennspeed Motorsports
- Fibergass Getty Design doors with Appbiz RSA door panels
- Lexan rear window, front vent, and rear quarter windows
- Welded reinforcements for front and rear antisway bars
- RSR-style reinforcements to rear shock towers, caps, and rear crossmember
- Battery boxes deleted



Misc mods
- Reverse windshield wiper park
- 965 leather dash
- Recaro SPG Pole Position buckets, covered in leather by FVD
- Center console with battery, cylinder head temp and trans temp gauges
- Safety Devices full cage, tied in at 6 points
- Lindsey Racing 3-outlet 5 lb Halon fire suppression system
- 37-degree Air Conditioning with Performance Aire underbelly condenser
- 3.8RS tail with extensions and 50-inch wing
- Ducktail for street driving







The car was featured in an article by Marco Gerace in Excellence Magazine in December of 2003.

But it's no Garage Queen.
- The car won both its class and the overall championship in the Touring Division of the Open Track Challenge in 2004.
- The car placed 2nd in class and 3rd overall in the Touring Division of the Open Track Challenge in 2003.
(In both cases, the car was driven by Jack Olsen and Tyson Schmidt.)

(And then, with just Jack Olsen driving: )
- The car won the GT2 class in the 2005 season of time trialing with the Northern California Racing Club.
- The car won the GT2 class in the 2005 season of wheel-to-wheel racing with the American Racing Club.
