You've got it right about NGKs - low numbers are hot & high numbers are cold. I was guessing that my engine profile was most like a 993 (EFI/EDIS ignition). As far as I can tell the OEM NGK for the 1997 993 turbo is a "6" heat range. So I went one colder and am using a "7." So far they're the right color and I'm not getting pinging.
