A friend who I trust mount tires for my three piece rims. One time the silicone got rubbed hard by the tire bead when we dismounted or mounted. Had to remove the tire then clean off and apply new silicone the whole way around the rim because I was unable to tell if there was more than one cut in the silicone. After this happened we watch a little closer when changing tires.

On another occasion I put a new set of rims together and when I applied the silicone there were a few small air bubles which came out of the crevas where the two rim halves meet. It appeared that one of the bubbles poped and gave the air a path to migrate out. I found that if you run the tip of the silicone caulking tube pressed tight into the crevas between the rim halves the air gets pushed out in front of the silicone. No problems since.
