There's a buyer's guide by Zimmerman, I think. "The Used Porsche 911 Story" or something like that. You may be able to find it in your local Borders/Barnes and Noble/Bookstar and thumb through the relevant parts. He talks about this air injection carbon fouling problem a bit, and opines that: all 993s eventually get this problem it can be delayed somewhat by carbon cleanout maintenance procedures, but that a top end rebuild is the way to fix a tune of about $6K. So that may factor into a potential purchase price.

edit: Also note that model year 1996-98 993s had OBDII systems for emissions, while the 1995 models did not. The later year cars have Varioram intakes which give 282 HP, while the 1995 cars do not (270 HP). No personal experience with either vintage of these cars, but I've heard some say that they'd rather take an earlier car (albeit with a few less HP) for the benefit of avoiding potential OBDII problems.
