I owned both. F350Lawman explained the differences very well.

I don't have either car now and had the 930 after the 993, but if I had to do it again, I think I'd lean toward the later technologies 993 if using frequently. The 930 was great on the highway and when moving, but the lack of power steering around the neighborhood made it "less than nimble". I also upgraded its AC so it worked well but older 911 AC, even if upgraded, is recirculate only. The 993 has a real AC system. It's just a more modern car, more civilized for use in the real world.

As you probably know, only the '89 930 had the 5-speed. All other years had 4-speeds. Many don't see this as a problem but I prefered the 5-speed. The 993 has 6-speeds of course but is geared tall so that around town I found myself in second gear much of the time. This was a dissatisfier and one of the reasons I sold it. I also didn't like the spoiler going up and down, up and down between every stop light on a low-speed road. I thought it made me look stupid, like I was trying to be boy racer or something. I found a RUF spoiler control module that kept the spoiler down until about 70 MPH -- a very nice mod IMO.

I haven't owned a 964 Turbo, but it's sort of a cross between the two with power steering and 993-like AC but some of the older generation characteristic rawness too. Could be a good option if you like the 964 heavier bumper look.
