The "rubber" in my '87 gave way with absolutely no warning at 36,000 miles. The car had never been tracked, was babied it's whole life, and had practically zero mods (B&B headers). I nearly over-reved the engine when it happened! I'm told that's one of the issues with the rubber centered disc, it doesn't provide the same wear feedback that a traditional clutch just sort of lets go! BTW, there was plenty of material left on the disc, it was the rubber puck that just ripped!
