The biggest problem I'd have with a GS of the R1200 variety is that I'd have to get those boots that KISS wore in order to touch the ground at a stop sign. Are all Germans 34" or greater in the stride? Tall bikes for short people are a big problem up in the hills where at times you need a long leg and a short one.
The F800GS could be the trick for the water cooled belt drive enthusiasts. The Ducati Hyper could be a good alternative with some box system cases and a beefy suspension. The rest of the cosmetics are already there if the frame is stressed for semi-off-road.
