watched that crash in slo-mo. nasty.
but it was also enhanced by the way carbon fiber comes apart. i once saw a piece of animation that showed carbon fiber upon comes apart in tiny little shards and turns into a cloud of black dust. the whole car is designed to disintegrate on impact, to help disperse the energy of a "shunt" like that. that crash was a classic example.

on the slo-mo you can also see the wheels coming off. F1 has a tether on those wheels to keep that from happening...guess the impact was a tad too much.
you can also see the first 12-14 inches of the driver's tub collapsing, just like it's designed to work. on last week's "Inside F1" they showed how the tub was made and why it's designed to collapse on impact. Kubica was kind enough to go out there and show us how it really works.

overall, a really nasty ride, but proof that these F1 guys sure know how to build safe cars. i'd crawl into one of those anyday! (but i'd hate to be on the track crew having to pick up that mess...must have taken a while to clear the track).

i imagine he'll be driving the backup "T" car next weekend, eh?
