heat exchangers

Hi, can someone help here. I just purchased used heat exchangers from a fellow pelicanite. I have a 1977 3 lt. turbo engine. The heat exchangers that are on there are missing the heat coverings over them, they are the ones with the thick flange. The ones I purschesed are with the thin flange.

ok here is the problem. After installing one side with the thin flange and hooking up the exhaust system then starting the engine, at 1000 rpm there is a "clacking" sound that is coming from the muffler. When I rev the engine pass 1000 rpm the clacking sound goes away. There is no exhaust leak anywhere.

Would this thin flange be causing this sound and is there any chance of hurting my engine.

I would appreciate some response.

Thanks
