You might find that you can significantly reduce the amount of popping and banging by not taking your foot completely off the throttle on the overrun - just leave it in 1/8" or so. Worked for me when I had an open pipe.

I think this works because the motor actually burns the fuel then...
'77 S with '78 930 power and a few other things.
