Fred, I tell you this because I just did it. First heat the assembly however you would like (Boil, heat gun, torch etc...) Then when heated, place the cap itself into your vice and crank it down, then use a SOFT rubber mallet and tap the assembly in the correct rotation and it will come off pretty easily.
You are going to put some small marks in the side of the cap, but these will hurt nothing besides your knowladge of them. I reused the aluminum sealing ring too and it didnt leak.
