I would reccoment not purchasing the manuals, especially as you have stated that you are not in the position to pay for a ton of maintenance (a contradiction so it seems...)

But, welcome to the pelican board! Between here and clark's garage, there is a huge wealth of information and many people much more knowledgable than myself who have answers to any questions you may have. Chances are someone here has tackled the exact same procedure you have questions with, saving you whatever the current price is for the workshop manuals. The pdf file isn't quite that bad, but 95% of what you'll have to tackle is covered by clark's garage or doing a quick search on previous forum postings.

Lets see some pics when you get a chance, and adding your car's year and turbo or NA to your signature will get you more accurate responses to your questions. Again, welcome aboard.
