My standard advice is to find a good shop to work with. I'm as hardcore a DIY'r as they come, but when it came time to tune my engine, I looked at this extremely expensive engine I just built and decided it wasn't worth blowing it up just so I could learn to tune it.

I also spent several hundred dollars I didn't need to spend because I was taking advice from every direction. This was mainly on sensors and pickups that weren't what I really needed.

A little more money spent up front on the ECU can save hundreds in tuning if your tuner already knows the system.
