IMO trying to cut/reweld is baaaad news - as you said, it would be totally freehand, and a coin flip at best WRT fitment, not to mention introducing more slag/garbage potential inside of them.
I would slowly work them on to the motor - start with #'s 3 and 6 (where they're off the most, then work to the front of the motor.
