Let's put it this way. Suppose Americans used the same amount of oil per capita as Germans. I.e., appx 55% less.

- The USA would be almost self-sufficient in oil. For those of you who think there is a difference between imported and domestic oil, well, we'd need almost no imports.

- World oil consumption would be appx 12-13% lower. A 12% gap between consumption and production capacity would have a enormous impact on oil price. $50/bbl would not be impossible.

- Countries like Iran, Venezula, Russia, etc would be financially struggling. And politically much, much weaker. Putin would be begging us to forgive his debt, not strutting his stuff on the world stage.

What, really, is the difference between the USA and Germany? Germans have hot (gasoline-powered) Porsches, autobahns, plasma TVs, whirlpool jacuzzis, iPods, etc - all the same technological luxuries that Americans have. But they consume these luxuries in a less profligate manner, their cars get much better MPG, they have a network of trains (the most fuel-efficient transport). Also, they are aggressively developing alternative and renewable energy.

Just an example of what alternatives and conservation can, in fact, do.
