Pat - I don't know what they do to flow more. 911st may be right - but I adjust those head settings to match my flows at injectors. If I was looking for more fuel I would adjust them to match at the high end of range rather than mid or low - ie pick the highest one and tweek the others towards it. I would suspect that the slits may be altered in a high flow head? Both of these would tend to deliver more over the whole range as far as I can see.
The piston as far as I can determine simply maintains the integrity of the response of the system as it was designed. As the piston/bore wears, this is degraded, and I suspect you inherit a bunch of tuning problems due to too wide a range of AFRs over the working range. I simply tried to copy my original, down to matching the weight, and found a tighter range of AFR - which definitely helps in the tuning dept.
