I always work from the turbo out. Bolt the turbo to the stock bracket using 4 short 10mm bolts, then mount the J-pipe to the turbo and heat exchanger crossover pipe. Leave it all loose and wiggle it around then tighten it all up moving back and forth from the turbo to the crossover pipe. You may have to apply some pressure.
As a last resort you might have to loosten the exchangers as well. The J-pipe does not bend easy but the entire assembly will warp with heat over time.
+1 on that advice.
I ended up using two floor jacks to support the J pipe; one under the turbo and the other under the wastegate flange.
I'll find out if I have any exhaust leaks when I install my new muffler
