This is a dumb question and slightly off topic. What are heat exchangers. I know they act as headers by getting rid of exhaust gases from the block and funnels it through the exhaust. But is this the mechanism used to generate heating for the car? If so, how does it work exactly.

I don't own a 930 or early 911 and have just recently started coming to this forum, although I've always loved how the 930 looked and fell in love with them when I saw one at an auction. So please forgive my ignorance.
