"Image is very important to Porsche as it is a big reason why people come to their showrooms to get a 996 when an M3 is as fast for little more than half the price. It's not enough to make a better product, it has to be more exclusive too and a sub-30k P car will dilute the brand too much."

The question Porsche has to answer is whether it's a luxury car maker or a sports car maker. If it's a luxury car maker, then the SUV is a reasonable idea and a sub-Boxster would dilute the brand. If it's a sports car maker, then they've diluted the brand and thrown away the Boxster profits on a go-fast station wagon in the same stroke.

If they continue on this path, the 996 vs. M3 choice will get to be a very easy one for sports car buyers. But by then, Porsche can put that V8 in a plus-size SUV, solidifying the luxurious image of the brand and winning over Cadillac and Lincoln SUV buyers at the same time. My grandparents will be thrilled.
