Hmmn...

that would bug me too. i think popping out of gear can indicate worn dog teeth or slider. if i understand correctly, those are the parts that actually lock in the gear that you've selected with the shifter. i would think that if this issue were clutch cable related, you would have had difficulty (maybe grinding) when trying to engage the gear. the other thing i would think of is the shift coupler. if something is amiss there, its possible that you're not getting it all the way engaged into 1st.
