Can't you just take off the rear wheel and get to the thermostat on top? I just went and looked and I can see the thermostat even with the wheel on....or are you trying to change it out? It doesn't look like there's much clearance in there if you wanted to take it out due to the distance to the top of the wheel well...but if you're just after the wiring, it's readily accessible from inside the wheel well...

I just took out the entire unit to clean it up, and it wasn't a difficult job...a couple nuts on the bottom of the fan casing, several nuts on the bottom bracket, take off the two oil lines, and the whole unit comes out. Does yours still have the louvered stone guard on it?
