I went through the same scenario and tried most of the options yuo refer to; at the end, the only way to keep the temps under control at the track was to add a front valance cooler. I felt the same you do about the original look and wanted to maintain the rubber lip also. I took the valance off, installed the cooler (1" clearance between the cooler and hub) and took the valance to a friend of mine body shop to cut and fit - maintaing thr rubber lip. The end result: temps @ 210 max on the track, and cool looking too.
