That plate has a fork on it that locates the shift fork. They are notorious for leaking. Have you checked to see if the nuts are still properly torqued? Mine started leaking almost immediately after a full rebuild and I know the nuts are torqued, new gasket, clean surfaces and both paper gasket and DOW 721 sealant. Ugh...
Here is a pic. I am going to remove mine with everything still in the car but I don't want to say that getting it realigned and reinstalled is going to be a cake walk
