The reason it is not good to clamp the slimp-joint is because the engines grow dimensionally from cold to engine operating temperatures. The exhaust port distances from one another (left bank to right bank) is very measurable. If you clamp the slip joint, it will stress the headers and stress cracks will develop on the heater boxes, if you have them, and worse, the collectors and the exhaust port flanges.
I was thinking of modifying mine when I take mine off to fix some cracks in the welds with this approach. These are used a lot in transverse mounted engines exhaust systems. Of course, fabbing it will be a nuisance, but at least it will handle expansion contraction better. What do you guys think?
