Andy, my Carrera had an Identical problem after water exposure (washing/ rain) and was found to be a leaky distributor cap, with moisture accumulation on the inside interfering with rotor etc. I did a search, and found this was a common problem on the 84+ Carrera. I couldn't believe it... those friggin Porsche engineers who could engineer great distr. caps for 30 years (never had the issue and my SC), for rally cars, 24 hour races, etc now make a car that has trouble in the rain!?!. Anyhoo, next time happens, take the cap off, check for moisture and spray some 'spray start' in side and let dry for minute or two. Should take care until u can get new cap.
