Hope the fan blades didn't do a number on your thumb, just provided a stern warning.
If your engine still idles, before you start fussing with the fuel head, pinch off or disconnect and plug the vac line to the disty, start the engine, advance distributor by hand till the engine stumbles, back it off a bit, lock it down. Timing will be close to optimum and you can fuss with fuel head and air/fuel mixture, not worry about timing.
