I had this same thing happening to me on my 79 930 and it turned out the timing was retarded on my distributor, as I had developed problems with the vacuum retard mechanism. Went away when I rebuilt the distrinutor.
Please check timing first and then see about A/F ratio.
The walls are thin on these tubes, but normally at idle under no load you should not see exhaust gas temps high enuff to glow steel cherry red or orange.
