I have heard of MSDs breaking down in the engine bay for some reason... possible heat issue. Although most guys that run them love it. However, there is a reason that the NASCAR guys run two boxes in their race cars... we hear about them switching between boxes all the time. The old school CDI box is pretty decent. However, since the tach is doing crazy things, that kinda points towards a bad coil. Do you have a spare Bosch coil you can swap in? My little old 914 used to eat MSD high power coils for breakfast for some unknown reason. Went back to a Bosch after the third failure and it ran fine for years.
