Toe has a HUGE impact on steering feel. I have noticed this in the last two 911s I've owned, and consequently have become an obsessive DIY alignment'er.
Specifically, my cars both came to me with excessive toe-in, which made the steering turn-in very responsive, almost darty, but the on-center feel was wooden and numb. I have dialed out to nearly 0-toe (just a couple mm) and suddenly the on-center feel, even with my 964 power steering comes ALIVE!!! Turn-in response is a lot more linear and I can go down the freeway with the wheel between my thumb and index finger and feel the car track the road crown.
Next I'm going to start messing with rear toe, though I will definitely keep more toe out back for the sake of stability.
