Is there a reason that the 90 degree elbow on the drip tanks extend so far down? What would possibly be the downside to shortening the downtube so that the drip tank sat further up under the car and thus out of the way of any potential strikes from rocks or road debris?

If I had the downtube shortened and rewelded to the flange, does anyone with an engineering background see that this might cause a problem? Brian??
