Porsche started experimenting with rust-proofing in 1967 when they produced 3 911's made of polished, unpainted stainless steel. They were driven for thousands of miles, one still remains.
Obviously, the costs were prohibitive.
Porsche started galvanizing the wheel arches and pans on the D-series cars in the summer of 1970. It added 70DM to the cost of each car.
In 1976 Porsche started galvanizing the entire car for the I series cars. The only part that was not treated was the coupe roof. The treatment was actually a Zinc coating applied in a 500C immersion bath. Porsche began offering the 6 year warranty against rust at this point. They had to use different welding procedures and protect workers against the nasty vapors which the zinc can give off.
I don't know why I can remember this stuff but forget my wife's birthday.
