Question 3rd is playing hard to get

replaced all shift bushings, broken spring and upper spring seat in shifter, new tapered pins in shift rod, no significant play anywhere, even used the zip-tie trick mentioned in a post here to take out the last bit of slop between the shifter rod and the new bushing back at the tranny housing. the thing shifts much better than when I got it two years ago (that's only a few hundred miles, I've been working on it a lot), but there's still one problem: when going into 3rd, about half the time it hangs up with a rubbery feel between Neutral and 3rd, and then if you pull back a bit harder it sort of goes 'klunk' and pops into gear... like the shifter is stuck on something and then hops over it. The other half of the time it's a bit notchy but not too bad. No grinding of the gears at all. 1, 2 4 and 5 all feel pretty good, although 1st will feel similar in maybe 1 of 10 or 20 shifts. the other gears always feel fine. just plain old new 80W90 gear oil in it, right up to the fill hole and no higher; felt similar before with the mystery blue-green gear oil in there. Any ideas? BTW: is $125 a decent price for a sideshifter core (was 'OK when removed' but little history is known)?
