Sorry to hear of your engine failure.

I the early 70s I worked my way through school rebuilding air-cooled VW engines. Most failed from #3 exhaust valve failure. As you say the carnage is unbelievable. Usually a total long block and in the case of the turbo motor, often the turbo also.

Typically exhaust valves that fail in good engines do so from excessive CHT.

Look at what the factory did to control this situation, they limited the HP on air-cooled street motors. For racing band aids were applied like flat fans. At the extreme, high power density means very short life spans of critical components.

There may not be limits to your bank account but there are limits within the architecture of the machine.
