The center cartridge will sit in the recess of the turbine housing. You have to pay attention to the area that the heat shield will sit/seat. It is the heat shield that will give you the seal. A little trick that you can apply "when" you have some corrosion to the interior mating surfaces is white lithium grease. When you get the temps high enough the grease will turn to carbon and seal up the small corrosion.

If the area of concern is inside the the radius seat or profile >the turbine wheel head runs in the radius. Any major erosion will effect the hot side efficiency of the turbine wheel. If you are peeling off metal strips or strips on the radius, that is usually from turbine wheel rub from a failed cartridge. The turbine wheel has made contact with the turbine housing. You have to very careful in this situation. Metal transfer that is NOT removed and still embedded will dislodge right into the path of your rotating turbine wheel.. You'll be left with a trashed wheel.
