I've machined centers and then bought the rim halves. It's certainly doable, but the rim halves probably run over $200 per wheel and the billet aluminum for the center is probably around $100 to $200 per wheel. You can buy a wheel for about $500, so there's not as much savings you'd think.

If you have access to free billet, then it's another story.
