I don't believe it is crucial that the top "breathes" There is not much top pressure in these (travel is quite small).
Good point Benny...having the top closed to atmospheric pressure may not have a big impact since the travel distance is so small.

As far as the bolt used to adjust spring tension on top, that has been discussed quite a bit over the years. Would have to spend some time searching threads to understand the pros and cons.
