Just to chime in.... a rich mixture would make the car run cooler because of excess fuel. A lean mixture would be the cause of excess heat.

In the picture above it is common for those to heat up at the point where the collectors and exhaust come together when under full boost (WOT). I'm guessing this was simulating a dyno under a 3rd gear pull to initiate the boost and the heat you are seeing. The motor could have been lean here but I'm guessing with all of the toys he has on this motor (electrical) that they have their AFR's dialed in.
