You need to check all the basics: plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel pump fuse, fuel pump relays (can you hear them when the key is in the run position?), yellow overboost relay, delayed cutoff relay, CDI (can you hear a whine when the key is in the run position?)...
We're gonna have to change your name to StickyRocket! But you're right, we do need a repository for this common topic.

Philip, start her up in the driveway and begin methodically tugging on all wires to see if you can find what shuts her down. Pretty crude starting point, I know, but you might be surprised. Wiggle the yellow relay, pull on the overboost pressure switch wire, wiggle the harness that goes under the fuse/relay tray, check the coil to distributor wire and the wires to the coil, tug on the connector to the CDI, check the connection to the control arm micro switch, and the same on the speed relay under the seat. You've either got fuel pumps or ignition sporadically shutting down.

My thought is it's ignition because you mentioned backfiring. If fuel related, it would just die and then start back up most likely without a backfire.
