On my '87 the switch that is circled is momentary and operates the small washer pump under the small windsheild washer bottle next to the master cylinder.
It is marked for a higher concentration of washer detergent in the owner manual and it sprays water out of the nozzles for about 3 seconds after pressing it.

When putting on bigger wheels and tires the big washer bottle in front of the driver side tire usually rubs on the tire during fast right turn cornering so you can remove it and just use the little washer bottle and that switch.

I've never seen another car with 2 windsheild washer bottles and pumps, but I wouldn't be surprised if some old Mercedes does too.
