thanks for all the replies. to cap this thread, i got an "unknown" condition 911/01 5-speed, and it slotted right in. the magnetic nut was grimy and the fluid was black, but the fluid at the top leaked out clean amber(when the gear box was upside down) so maybe the fluid settled dirty at the bottom and stayed clean at the top. installed, the car shifts very smoothly and surely, no crunch, new oil put in. the 4-speeder car is transformed, engine is kept at better rev range, it's just more sporty. anybody with a 911 with a 4-speeder must seriously consider a 5-speed. it's a different, much much more of a car.
