I had that problem a year or so ago on my '74 2.0. It turned out to be a ruptured diaphragm in the vacuum advance unit on the dizzy, I think ( my memory is fading almost as fast as my hairline).

Anyway, try adjusting your timing just to get it to idle. I sucked on the vac. hose and it would not hold a vacuum. That's how I finally tracked down the problem.

Just a possibility.
