I am not sure but I suspect there is an art to doing a 'reading'.

I think you are supposed to do a WOT run, shut the car down, coast to the side of the track, and pull the plugs for inspection.

If we just do this with our valve adjustment I suspect that things like a bad valve guide that is passing oil might show up pretty well (a solid contribution of detonation). However, if one had a injector that worked well at idle and cruse but is restricted at WOT, this might not show up or it might be to late by the time one gets to there next reading.
