If properly managed, The available inlet area in the engine lid can be used to both provide air flow thru the I/C core and support the cooling fan and induction system.

The solution is to provide a inlet ahead of the I/C so a percentage of the air flow will enter the top rear of the engine compartment on its way to the cooling fan,
This allows to air temp closer to ambient at the air cleaner inlet,

So the trick is not to close off all the engine lid (grille) area that is not over the I/C but rather provide other inlet areas as well so that we can manage the requirements of the other sub systems .
