I've been running 295/35/18's on the rear & 245/45/17's on the front for years now.
I just changed to 255/45/17's on the front last friday, when I got new shoes for the old girl all the way around.
Steering is a bit quicker now with the 255's up front, but otherwise the handling characteristics are the same as it has been. the car rides good, handles good, stops good.
I have no clearance issues, and the car sits rather low ( approx. 1" below Euro height).
I run Fikse rims at the standard offset for a no-spacer rear set-up (18 x 11), and an additional 1/4" negative front offset (17 x 8.5) to gain fender clearance for being so low.
