why is 930 mileage so much better on long trips?

Daily commuting 11 miles each way on freeway I am averaging 12mpg per tank. No turbo until engine is up to temp and then only one event per commute. Probably 5 minutes at 25 mph, followed by 7-8 minutes at 60-70mph.

Last weekend I visited a friend, involved 70 miles each way at 75-80mph. Refilled after the trip and was surprised to see 18 mpg.

Same gas, same cruising speed. Any ideas why there is such a huge difference?

Does car use more gas when warming up? Suggestions I might try to improve my daily mileage?
